To that end he purchased vast citrus plantations in the valley known for the best cultivation conditions and he planted seedlings which he brought over from the Damder plantations.

If until now the plantations belonged to non-Jews and there were only a few sales of esrogim, a new era commenced with commercial-quantity export, under the personal supervision of Rav Dahan granting more and more Jews with the unique hidurim of the Moroccan esrog. Rabbi Dahan imports esrogim to the various Jewish communities around France, Europe and the United States and has more than 30 years of experience cultivating, importing and marketing the Moroccan Esrog for those wishing to fulfill the mitzvah in accordance with halacha. Who are proficient in handling this sensitive produce. Since the growth of these esrogim requires meticulous care and constant supervision, he maintains continuous contact with his workers and travels to Morocco numerous times throughout the year in order to supervise the delicate and complex cultivation of the esrog. He takes all the necessary means so that the esrogim should grow as beautiful, healthy and clean as possible.

Rav Dahan has developed a comprehensive irrigation system that waters the trees precisely according to their needs. He also has an ingenious method of wrapping the esrogim to protect them from nearby branches. Every year the esrogim are sprayed with enough pesticides to ward off the insects, but not too much, and this keeps the fruit clean from black dots and blemishes. The esrogim are under the stringent kashrut supervision of Hisachdus HaRabonim of the USA and Canada – (Satmar). Every year Rav Dahan makes sure to allocate the choicest esrogim to Gedolei Yisroel, among them Rav Chaim Kanievsky and the Toldos Aharon Rebbe. The Rosh Yeshiva, Rav Shmuel Auerbach ztz"l also used the Moroccan esrog, as well as many other renowned Gedolei Yisroel.


Lately, Rav Michael Reich has begun marketing the Moroccan esrogim in Eretz Yisroel. Rav Michael, alumnus of Yeshivas Ma'alos Hatorah, was always connected to the Moroccan esrogim. Those, whose longing for a Moroccan etrog of true cleanliness had previously met with disappointment, would now have the object of their yearning.

Checking & Choosing
each Esrog

At firsts years agom he bought only a few for himself, his close friends and important Torah scholars, among them Rav Eichenstein. But he then realizes that there is a great demand among those who are scrupulous with the halacha and an even greater demand for clean esrogim without any blemishes or marks. He therefore decided to benefit the public and fill the demand. He traveled to Morocco to be present at the selecting and sorting stage, meticulously checking and choosing each esrog.

The esrogim then go through a complex process – from the import permits, through the Ministry of Health and Agriculture, inspections, further pest control and finally a permit for their timely entrance into Israel in time for Succos. Rav Reich is present and on-hand throughout all these stages, making sure the esrogim do not get damaged. Those, whose longing for a Moroccan etrog of true cleanliness had previously met with disappointment, would now have the object of their yearning.

With a sense of privilege and commitment, Rav Reich and Rav Dahan feel honored with the responsibility of importing the Damder esrogim to Eretz Yisroel. They have selected a group of credible talmidei chachomim from across the country - Yerushalayim, the North and Center of Israel (Bnei Brak, Modi'in Ilit, Raanana and others) who received special guidance on the importance and care that must be taken when handling the esrogim, guaranteeing they will not become posul in any way chas ve'shalom, so that the general, punctilious public from all over Eretz Yisroel will merit blessing over mehudar and unblemished Damder esrogim.
